CHAPTER 2

Love That Looks Like Christ

“We love him, because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:19 (KJV)

Love Begins With Receiving

We love because He first loved us. Receiving comes before producing. We do not manufacture Christian love from an empty place.

When Christ becomes our source, human love becomes something we receive with gratitude rather than something we control in order to survive.

Love Becomes Visible

Love becomes patience, forgiveness, restraint, listening, keeping our word, truth, service, boundaries, apology, non-retaliation, and prayer.

Love does not mean endless agreement, absence of boundaries, tolerating harm, calling sin good, or taking responsibility for another person's life.

Love Does Not Need to Control

Can I speak truth without forcing agreement? Help without becoming indispensable? Encourage without taking ownership? Let someone grow beyond needing me?

Love makes room for free will without approving every choice. It sees the person, not only the problem, and protects dignity while addressing what is wrong.

Truth, Grace, and Patterns

Ephesians 4:15 speaks of truth in love. Truth without love can wound. Love without truth can enable.

Love does not keep a scoreboard for leverage, but wisdom still notices patterns. Grace and discernment can exist together.

Love Repairs and Releases

Love returns with: I'm sorry. I was wrong. Can we try again? Relationships often become strong because people learn repair.

Love is not always close. Necessary distance does not require bitterness. We can release someone without needing to destroy them.

Love Rejoices and Serves

Love celebrates when someone else grows, succeeds, receives opportunity, or no longer needs our help. It does not need another person to remain small so we can remain important.

Love serves without an audience and has boundaries because love has stewardship of children, covenant, leadership, body, time, finances, and responsibilities.

Love Enemies Without Becoming Their Victim

Jesus said, “Love your enemies...” Matthew 5:44 (KJV). That does not mean unrestricted access. It means refusing to let hatred become the fruit another person's wrongdoing produces in us.

We return to the Vine when love is immature. We receive. We remain. What He gives us begins becoming something we can give away.
