CHAPTER 3

Joy and Peace That Circumstances Cannot Carry

“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing...” Romans 15:13 (KJV)

Joy Is Not Denial

Happiness is good and often circumstance-linked. Joy can go deeper. We can cry and trust God, grieve and know He is good, be disappointed and remain faithful.

John 15:11 speaks of Jesus' joy remaining in us. John 14:27 speaks of His peace. The source is Christ.

Control Can Feel Like Peace

Planning can be stewardship, but sometimes we plan because we believe nothing can go wrong if we control enough variables. Peace dependent on predictability is fragile.

We can also make people responsible for our peace through reassurance, agreement, texting, children's choices, or relational security.

Peace Is Not Passivity

Peace may make the call, have the conversation, ask for help, go to the appointment, set the boundary, budget, apologize, leave danger, or tell truth.

Difficult feelings can coexist with fruit. Fear can be real without directing us. Sadness can coexist with joy. Anger at injustice can exist without hatred.

Practice Return

Philippians 4:6–7 connects prayer, supplication, thanksgiving, and bringing requests to God with peace guarding heart and mind. Thanksgiving does not deny pain; it widens the frame.

Joy notices what fear misses: God is still here, beauty still exists, grace is still available today.

Surrender Outcomes

We can obey and still not control what happens next. We can tell truth and someone may leave. Parent faithfully and a child may choose painfully. Pray and receive an answer different from what we wanted.

Joy rooted in Christ can say both, I wanted something different, and, I still trust You.

Presence, Help, and Mature Peace

Matthew 6:34 reminds us not to live mentally in tomorrow. Sometimes God provides through counselors, pastors, friends, doctors, support groups, and the body of Christ.

Protecting my peace should not become spiritual language for avoiding every discomfort. Mature peace can remain grounded inside necessary discomfort.

Return to the Vine

When peace disappears, ask: What am I trying to carry without the Vine? When joy disappears: What have I asked circumstances to provide that I need to receive from Christ?

We abide, pray, give thanks, surrender control, do the next faithful thing, receive help, grieve honestly, and receive today's gifts. Joy. Peace. Fruit from the Vine.
