Carried Forward

Day 7 of 10 · Companion to Legacy

Plant, Water, and Release

Reads as a complete devotion on its own

Two people planting and watering new growth together in golden garden light.

“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.”

1 Corinthians 3:6 · KJV

Paul understood both the privilege and the limit of human influence. He planted. Apollos watered. God gave the increase. Each person had a meaningful part, but neither person could produce spiritual life or claim ownership of the harvest.

This truth releases us from the pressure to control another person's response. We can parent faithfully and still have a child with free will. We can share the Gospel and hear no. We can teach carefully and watch someone learn through another voice. Faithfulness carries what belongs to us and returns the outcome to God.

It also protects us from pride. The seed did not begin with us, the soil does not belong to us, and the growth is not ours to manufacture. Someone may carry forward something we planted without remembering our name. If truth remains and Christ receives glory, the work was not wasted.

Some seasons are for planting. We introduce truth, begin a conversation, create an opportunity, or serve without visible response. Other seasons are for watering. We encourage what is already growing, repeat what needs time, strengthen a weak beginning, or remain present through slow formation.

Release is part of discipleship. A person may become ready to seek God without calling us first, serve in another place, choose a method we would not choose, or go farther than we did. Their growing dependence upon Christ is not rejection of us. It may be evidence that the work is maturing.

Do the part love gives you, then open your hands. Plant without demanding immediate fruit. Water without claiming the field. Bless the person who continues the work. God sees the whole story, including every quiet seed whose harvest remains beyond your view.

Reflect

Sit with the question

Where are you trying to control an outcome that belongs to God? Are you in a season of planting, watering, waiting, or releasing?

Practice

Take one faithful step

Write two columns. In the first, name what faithfulness requires from you. In the second, name what only God can produce. Complete one action from the first column and pray over the second.

Pray

Bring it before God

Father, thank You for allowing me to plant and water. Forgive me for trying to control growth, claim the harvest, or measure faithfulness only by what I can see. Help me do my part with love and release what belongs to You. Bless every person who carries the work farther. Amen.

Truth to carryI can be faithful without becoming responsible for the increase.
