Carried Forward

Day 8 of 10 · Companion to Legacy

Prepare Someone to Carry It

Reads as a complete devotion on its own

An older adult passing a compass and journal into younger hands at a trailhead.

“And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him...”

Deuteronomy 34:9 · KJV

Moses' leadership had an ending, but God's work did not. Joshua had been near enough to observe, serve, learn, and receive responsibility before the moment of transition arrived. Succession was not an emergency plan. It had been forming within relationship.

We often protect usefulness by keeping knowledge in our own hands. We know the process, carry the history, hold the relationships, and solve every problem. That can feel efficient, but it leaves people unprepared and makes our presence more important than the health of what we were asked to steward.

Preparing someone requires more than transferring procedures. Procedures explain what to do when conditions remain familiar. Principles help a person discern what to do when conditions change. Teach the reason, the values, the boundaries, the mistakes, and the questions that shaped the work.

Make room before you are forced to step away. Let someone watch. Then let them try. Give real responsibility while support is still available. Allow differences that do not compromise truth or integrity. A successor is not required to become a copy of the person who came before.

Release can uncover fear. What if they do it better? What if people prefer their leadership? What if the work changes? Those questions reveal whether we were building God's work or preserving our place within it. Humility can bless another person's strength without treating it as a threat.

Every role eventually changes hands, changes form, or reaches its end. Faithful stewardship prepares for that truth. Ask what would be lost if you were suddenly unavailable. Then begin placing knowledge, trust, and responsibility into someone else's hands while you still have time to walk beside them.

Reflect

Sit with the question

What responsibility, knowledge, or relationship depends too heavily upon you? Who could begin learning the principles and practices needed to carry it wisely?

Practice

Take one faithful step

Choose one responsibility and invite one appropriate person into it. Explain not only how it works, but why it matters. Give them one real part to carry this week.

Pray

Bring it before God

God, help me steward what You have given without making myself irreplaceable. Show me who needs preparation, trust, and opportunity. Free me from fear of being surpassed or forgotten. Teach me to transfer truth, develop wisdom, and release responsibility with open hands. Amen.

Truth to carryPreparing another person is part of carrying my own assignment faithfully.
