Build Into People
Suggested time Saturday 10:20 to 11:20 AM | 60 minutes
“For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:”
Ephesians 4:12 KJV
Purpose
Help parents, leaders, friends, and church members recognize that healthy influence equips people rather than keeping them small or dependent.
Leader Teaching
The KJV word “perfecting” carries the sense of equipping and preparing. The goal is not flawless people. The goal is a body in which people are becoming able to serve, discern, tell truth, accept correction, repent, and help someone else grow.
Good leadership develops people. It teaches why, not only what. It allows age appropriate or maturity appropriate responsibility. It corrects without humiliation and notices character alongside skill. A gift can open a door that character is not ready to carry, so waiting and preparation can be part of development.
This belongs in homes as well as churches. Children are becoming adults. New believers are becoming people who can open Scripture and pray for themselves. Team members can become leaders. Specific encouragement can help someone recognize strength without assigning a calling God has not given us authority to assign. Speak purpose, not pressure.
Words that strengthen
1. Invite each participant to choose one person they know well enough to encourage truthfully.
2. Write one specific observation of character, growth, faithfulness, courage, compassion, skill, or responsibility.
3. Add one sentence that points the strength toward Christ without predicting the person’s future.
4. Ask participants to decide when and how they can share the encouragement privately after the retreat.
Conversation Questions
What helps correction build capability instead of shame?
Where might you need to give someone appropriate responsibility?
What is the difference between recognizing a gift and assigning a calling?
Leader Watchpoint
Avoid public blessing exercises that expose participants who receive little feedback. Keep written encouragement grounded in what is actually known, not spiritual prediction. Do not use “God told me” language to control another person’s future.
Closing Prayer
God, teach us to see people as people You love, not resources for our plans. Help us encourage truthfully, correct with dignity, and make room for others to grow. Amen.
