Day 9 of 14 · Companion to Purpose Led
The Courage to Obey
Reads as a complete devotion on its own

“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
Joshua 1:9 · KJV
Sometimes the next step is clear and still frightening. We may keep asking for confirmation when what we are really waiting for is the disappearance of fear. But courage matters because fear exists.
Fear is information, not authority. It can tell you there is risk, exposure, possible rejection, or a real cost. Listen carefully enough to prepare, but do not hand fear the final decision. Purpose led people are not fear led.
Courage still uses wisdom. Counting the cost, gathering information, making a budget, receiving training, considering safety, and preparing responsibly do not cancel faith. Wisdom prepares to obey. Fear studies the risk so it can avoid obedience forever.
The step may be smaller than the fear. One phone call. One honest conversation. One application. One boundary. One page. One apology. One request for help. We often imagine having to carry the entire future when God is asking only for today's movement.
Courage also refuses to force other people into our risk. If God has given you an assignment, it creates responsibility for you. It does not automatically require everyone else to agree, fund it, join it, or absorb its cost.
The outcome does not determine whether the obedience was faithful. You may learn, adjust, or discover that one step was preparation for another. Courage comes from Who goes with you, not from becoming certain enough to control what happens next.
Reflect
Sit with the question
Are you still discerning, or has the next step become clear and fear is asking for one more delay? What specific risk does fear want you to notice?
Respond
Take one faithful step
Prepare wisely for the real risk, then reduce the step to the smallest faithful action you can take. Complete that action today if it is safe and possible. Let movement be obedience, not a demand for a guaranteed outcome.
Pray
Bring it before God
Lord, thank You that courage does not require me to feel fearless. Help me face reality, prepare wisely, and refuse to let fear lead. Show me the next step, keep me from pressuring others into my responsibility, and remind me that You go with me. Amen.
Truth to carryI do not need tomorrow's courage to take today's faithful step.
