Rooted and Fruitful

Day 12 of 14 · Companion to Bearing Fruit

Plant, Water, and Release

Reads as a complete devotion on its own

Two adults planting and watering a seedling in a community garden.

“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.”

1 Corinthians 3:6–7 · KJV

We participate in another person's growth, but we do not create spiritual life. One person plants, another waters, and God gives the increase. Remembering our part protects us from both pride and exhaustion.

Healthy discipleship points people toward Christ rather than making them dependent upon us. We can teach someone to pray, open Scripture, ask wise questions, recognize conviction, repent after failure, seek counsel, and take responsibility for the next step. The goal is the Vine, not permanent reliance on the person who first helped.

Growth needs room for questions and uneven progress. People should not be shamed for what nobody has taught them. A humble, “I do not know. Let us look together,” can be more useful than a confident answer that has not been examined.

Much discipleship happens in ordinary life. Come with me. Sit at the table. Let us pray. Watch this, then you try. People learn through Scripture and teaching, but also through apology, service, decisions, boundaries, hospitality, and the way faith responds when plans change.

Make room for manageable mistakes. Correct what could harm, but do not take over every time someone does something differently. Encourage specific growth. Connect them with the wider body of Christ and people whose gifts can offer what you cannot.

Release is part of faithful care. Celebrate when someone begins to stand, serve, discern, teach, and encourage others. Their decreasing dependence upon you is not loss if their dependence upon Christ is growing. Plant what is yours, water what is yours, and leave the increase with God.

Reflect

Sit with the question

Are you helping someone grow toward Christ or toward dependence upon you? Where do you need to plant, water, make room, connect, or release?

Practice

Take one faithful step

Choose one person you are helping. Give them one appropriate opportunity to pray, decide, serve, learn, or lead. Offer support without taking the responsibility back from them.

Pray

Bring it before God

God, thank You for allowing me to participate in another person's growth. Keep me from pride, control, and the need to remain necessary. Help me teach with patience, correct with humility, welcome questions, and make room for responsibility. I trust You to give the increase. Amen.

Truth to carryI can faithfully participate in growth without trying to become its source.
