Beside One Another

Day 3 of 14 · Companion to Walking Together

Make Room Without Losing Truth

Reads as a complete devotion on its own

Two different chairs beside a table with an open Bible and room for both.

“Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.”

Romans 14:19 · KJV

Not every difference is a conflict, and not every disagreement is disobedience. One person plans carefully while another adjusts as the day unfolds. One needs quiet to process while another thinks by talking. One enjoys a full room while another needs time alone. Difference can be inconvenient without becoming wrong.

Relationships grow strained when preference begins wearing the authority of truth. We may say, This is the right way, when we really mean, This is the way that feels most natural to me. Humility lets us examine whether Scripture has actually spoken or whether we have simply become attached to our own method.

Some matters are personal conviction. God may lead one person to abstain from something another can receive with gratitude. Conviction deserves respect, but it cannot be forced into another person's conscience. We can explain what obedience requires from us without claiming that every faithful person must make the same decision.

Other matters truly involve biblical truth, safety, honesty, or harm. Making room does not mean calling sin a preference or pretending every path is equally wise. Peace is not maintained by abandoning truth. It is pursued by speaking truth under the authority of Scripture, with a posture that still seeks another person's good.

Making room also does not require abandoning yourself. You can respect a person's difference and still communicate what you need. You can compromise on timing without violating conviction. You can allow another method without surrendering a necessary boundary. Room is created when both people are permitted to be honest without one person having to disappear.

Unity is not sameness. Two people can remain joined in love while learning at different speeds, carrying different gifts, holding different responsibilities, and approaching an ordinary task differently. The goal is not to make the other person more like us. It is to make room for both people to keep becoming more like Christ.

Reflect

Sit with the question

Is a current disagreement about biblical truth, personal conviction, wisdom, preference, or personality? Have you given your own method more authority than it deserves, or called something a preference that actually involves harm?

Practice

Take one faithful step

Name the kind of difference you are facing. If it is a preference, loosen your grip. If it is a conviction, explain it without forcing it. If it involves truth or safety, speak clearly and establish the boundary wisdom requires.

Pray

Bring it before God

God, teach me to pursue peace without losing truth. Show me where I have confused my preference with Your command or used tolerance to avoid what needs to be addressed. Help me make room for people to be different without requiring either of us to disappear. Amen.

Truth to carryI can make room for difference while remaining faithful to truth.
