CHAPTER 8

Faithful in the Small Things

“Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.” 1 Corinthians 4:2 (KJV)

Most of life is lived in ordinary moments. The alarm goes off. Dishes need washed. Someone needs a ride. Work needs finished. Bills need paid. Nobody applauds. Yet this is where a tremendous amount of purpose is lived.

Faithfulness Is Not Flashy

Showing up. Keeping your word. Doing the work. Being honest. Following through. Preparing when nobody is checking. Taking responsibility. Doing the right thing when doing it wrong would be easier.

The Small Things Reveal Us

“He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much...” Luke 16:10 (KJV). Faithfulness in small things reveals character.

More Is Not the Reward for Being Good

Stewardship is not a formula by which God owes us bigger things. Sometimes faithfulness means carrying the same responsibility for decades. Sometimes the reward is simply knowing: I carried what God gave me well.

Your Current Assignment Matters

Do not become so focused on the future assignment that you become careless with the present one.

Ordinary Work Can Be Worship

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord...” Colossians 3:23 (KJV). Cleaning, cooking, filing, driving, building, teaching, repairing, caring for children, answering phones, managing schedules, and doing laundry can all be done unto God.

Your Job and Your Calling May Not Be the Same Thing

Sometimes they overlap. Sometimes a job simply provides income, insurance, experience, or flexibility. Paul made tents. Acts 18:3 (KJV). Work can be work and still matter.

Excellence and Perfectionism Are Not the Same

Excellence says: I want to steward this well. Perfectionism says: This must be flawless or it says something bad about me. Sometimes done faithfully is better than perfectly unfinished.

Integrity Matters When Nobody Is Watching

“The integrity of the upright shall guide them...” Proverbs 11:3 (KJV). Purpose without integrity becomes dangerous. A good goal does not sanctify an ungodly method.

Character Carries What Talent Opens

Can our character carry money, attention, authority, criticism, conflict, responsibility, access to vulnerable people, private information, and success?

Faithfulness Includes Saying “I Can't”

Trustworthy people communicate when something changes rather than disappearing or continually promising what they cannot deliver.

Stop Saying Yes Before You Ask

Let me pray about that. Let me check my schedule. Let me think about what this requires. We do not need to give an immediate yes in order to be kind.

Your No Can Protect Your Yes

Every yes costs time, energy, attention, money, and capacity. A wise no can protect the things God actually asked us to say yes to.

Faithfulness Includes Rest

Jesus said, “Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while...” Mark 6:31 (KJV). Rest can be obedience.

Rest Keeps Purpose From Becoming Our God

Rest reminds us: I am not God. The world continues while we sleep.

Faithfulness Includes Receiving

Some of us know how to give but do not know how to receive help, encouragement, care, rest, or someone else taking responsibility. Receiving requires humility too.

Do Not Despise Repetition

Another diaper. Lesson. Meeting. Page. Prayer. Conversation. Meal. Day of work. Repetition builds marriages, families, trust, skill, character, businesses, ministries, books, and lives.

You May Never Know What the Small Thing Did

Maybe you encouraged someone and forgot. They did not. Maybe you taught a child something that shapes them years later. Maybe you prayed for someone who never knew. Maybe you showed integrity when someone expected dishonesty.

Faithfulness Is a Form of Purpose

Sometimes the most purpose led thing we can do today is not discover something new. It is simply to carry what is already ours faithfully.
