CHAPTER 5
Learning to Recognize God’s Direction
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)
If Purpose Led means continually led, then we need to talk plainly about direction. How do I know what God is leading me to do?
God's Direction Will Not Contradict God's Word
God will not lead us contrary to Scripture. If what we believe requires dishonesty, manipulation, sexual sin, cruelty, exploitation, pride, revenge, or something else that contradicts His Word, we do not need more confirmation. “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” John 17:17 (KJV).
Not Every Good Thing Is God's Direction
Sometimes the choice is between good and good. Acts 16:6 (KJV) says Paul and his companions were forbidden by the Holy Ghost to preach in Asia. The gospel was good. The location was not their assignment at that moment. Sometimes the question is not whether it is good. It is whether it is ours.
Peace Is Helpful, but Peace Is Not a Shortcut
Peace matters, but feeling calm is not the whole test. We can feel peaceful because something is familiar or because uncertainty ended. Obedience can also feel uncomfortable.
Discomfort Is Not Automatically a Warning
Growth, leadership, speaking truth, apologizing, trying something new, taking a faithful risk, and leaving what is familiar can all be uncomfortable.
Fear Can Sound Like Wisdom
Wisdom gathers information so it can make a faithful decision. Fear gathers information so it can avoid one. Wisdom may say: There are risks. Let's prepare responsibly. Fear may say: Because there are risks, don't move.
Excitement Can Sound Like God Too
Excitement is not the Holy Spirit. We can be excited about something God never asked us to carry. Excitement is not bad. It simply means we still listen.
Desire Can Be Sincere and Still Need Surrender
Jesus prayed, “...nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” Luke 22:42 (KJV). Purpose led living requires surrender even of good desires.
Wise Counsel Matters
“Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” Proverbs 11:14 (KJV). Counsel can reveal blind spots, practical concerns, risks, strengths, patterns, and timing. But counsel is not outsourcing our relationship with God.
Other People Do Not Get to Become God for You
A pastor, mentor, parent, friend, spouse, leader, teacher, or counselor can advise you. They are still human. Receive counsel. Test it. Pray. Look at Scripture and reality. Stay teachable.
We Can Want Confirmation So Badly That We Hear What We Want
Asking ten people until one agrees is not seeking counsel. Neither is opening Scripture only to find support for what we already decided. Discernment requires enough humility to hear an answer we did not want.
Circumstances Matter, but They Are Not God
An easy path does not automatically mean God. A hard path does not automatically mean not God.
Direction Often Gets Clearer With Obedience
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105 (KJV). A lamp may show enough to keep walking, not the whole road.
Sometimes God Says Wait
“Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart...” Psalm 27:14 (KJV). Waiting is direction too.
Sometimes God Says No
No does not necessarily mean we prayed incorrectly, failed, lacked faith, or misheard everything. Sometimes God's direction really is no. Trust cannot depend on receiving an explanation for every no.
We Can Mishear God
We can mix God's direction with desire, fear, history, excitement, other people's voices, and assumptions. Humility has room to say: I think I added something. I misunderstood.
Do Not Protect a Wrong Interpretation
God does not need us to preserve our pride in order to protect His reputation. Purpose led people need enough humility to say: I may have gotten that wrong.
Ask Better Questions
God, what are my motives? What am I not seeing? What responsibility would this create? Who would be affected? Am I forcing something? Afraid? Chasing validation? Calling excitement peace? Calling fear wisdom? Is this mine? Is this now? Is this the right method? What do I need to learn? What is my next faithful step?
Follow What You Know
Sometimes two options remain reasonable after prayer, Scripture, counsel, motive examination, and reality. Make the wisest faithful decision you can and trust God enough to redirect you if necessary.
Purpose Led Does Not Mean Never Uncertain
The goal was never to learn a formula so well that we no longer needed God. The goal is relationship.
Know His Word. Pray. Surrender your desired answer. Listen. Seek wisdom. Pay attention to reality. Examine your motives. Take the step He makes clear. Wait when He says wait. Let no be no. Remain willing to be corrected. And keep walking.
Purpose led does not mean we always know exactly where the road is going. It means we know Who we are following.
