Why Desire Without Formation Leads Us Away from Covenant
In a busy marketplace, two merchants sold precious stones.
From a distance, their tables looked nearly identical.
Both displayed brilliant gems that sparkled in the morning sun.
Both attracted crowds.
Both promised that what they offered was rare and valuable.
A young man entered the market hoping to purchase a stone that would become part of his family's inheritance for generations to come.
He stopped at the first table.
The merchant lifted a dazzling stone and held it toward the light.
"Look how it shines," he said. "You'll never find a finer stone."
The young man admired it.
It was beautiful.
It sparkled from every angle.
Just as he reached for his purse, an elderly jeweler, who had quietly watched from across the market, spoke.
"Before you buy it, bring it to my lamp."
The merchant frowned.
"The sunlight is enough."
The old jeweler smiled kindly.
"Sunlight reveals beauty."
"But the lamp reveals truth."
Curious, the young man carried the stone into the jeweler's workshop.
The old man lit a bright lamp and placed the stone beneath its light.
The brilliance quickly faded.
Tiny fractures appeared.
Imperfections hidden beneath its polished surface became visible.
The stone had been carefully crafted to imitate something precious, but it had never possessed true value.
The young man looked at it in surprise.
"It looked so real."
The jeweler nodded.
"A counterfeit must resemble the genuine, or no one would desire it."
Then the old man opened a small wooden box and removed another stone.
At first glance, it seemed less impressive.
Its color was quiet.
Its surface was plain.
He placed it beneath the same lamp.
Instead of fading, it became more beautiful.
Its depth appeared.
Its clarity increased.
Its brilliance was not diminished by the light, it was revealed because of it.
The young man asked,
"How can I learn to tell the difference?"
The jeweler smiled.
"I have never trained an apprentice by handing him a box of counterfeits."
"I place the genuine in his hands until he knows it so well that the counterfeit no longer fools him."
"You see, those who spend their lives studying imitations often become suspicious of everything."
"But those who know the genuine recognize the counterfeit the moment it departs from the truth."
The young man carefully took the genuine stone into his hand.
He studied it.
Turned it in the light.
Held it close.
Only then did he begin to understand what true beauty looked like.
So it is with the Lord.
The enemy rarely offers what is obviously false.
He offers imitations that appeal to our desires while lacking the character to sustain God's purposes.
The answer is not to become consumed with studying every counterfeit.
It is to become so familiar with Christ that what is false no longer deceives you.
The more you know His character, His Word, His voice, and His ways, the more quickly you recognize anything that merely imitates Him.
For discernment is not born from fear of deception.
It is born from intimacy with the Truth.
We don’t fall into counterfeits because we’re shallow. We fall into counterfeits because we are unhealed, unformed, unwhole, or unfamiliar with covenant.
Unhealed and unformed are two angles of the same reality. Formation heals what survival distorted.
Healing forms what survival never built.
Before covenant requires capacity, capacity requires formation.
Formation is what breaks survival. Formation is what trains discernment.
Formation is what makes covenant possible.
“My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,” Galatians 4:19 (KJV)
Men and women are not the same, but neither are they opposites. They are designed to interlock, not just romantically, but covenantally.
When covenant with God has not formed a person, they reach for substitutes.
Substitutes feel like covenant fruit, but they collapse under covenant weight.
“For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.” Jeremiah 2:13 (KJV)
When women are unformed or unhealed, they tend to reach for counterfeits of what they were designed to receive through covenant:
Women are designed to receive through covenant:
• Safety
• Covering
• Identity
• Certainty
“¹He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.² I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.” Psalm 91:1-2 (KJV)
When formation is missing, women often seek substitutes for those things.
Counterfeit safety looks like low-risk relationships.
It looks like choosing emotionally predictable but spiritually passive men, choosing relationships that feel safe but don’t build anything, or staying where she won’t be hurt instead of where she can be whole. It is not true safety. It is simply low risk.
Counterfeit rescue looks like being helped instead of being covered.
It looks like confusing intensity for protection, bonding through crisis instead of calling, or picking men who rescue externally (money, logistics, loneliness) but never lead toward healing or obedience.
Rescue without repentance keeps the cycles alive.
Counterfeit identity looks like being wanted instead of being known.
It shows up in thoughts like “If he wants me, I have value” or “If he pursues me, I matter.” Desire cannot root identity. It can only activate insecurity.
Counterfeit certainty looks like control disguised as discernment.
It looks like pushing timelines, defining the relationship for emotional stability, using marital status as proof of calling, or baptizing anxiety as standards. Certainty without peace is just control with Scripture taped over it.
Men are designed to give and receive through covenant:
• Impact
• Leadership
• Mission
• Legacy
When formation is missing, men often reach for counterfeits of those things.
Counterfeit admiration looks like ego instead of honor.
It shows up as chasing attention, curating persona, performing to be noticed, or choosing partners who like the idea of him but do not know the man. Admiration is cheap. Honor requires reality.
Counterfeit access looks like intimacy without responsibility.
It shows up as situationships, emotional intimacy without direction, spiritual intimacy without obedience, or physical intimacy without covenant. Access without covering is consumption.
Counterfeit freedom looks like avoidance disguised as autonomy.
It shows up as “we’ll see,” “I’m not ready,” “why complicate things,” or “I don’t like labels.”
Freedom without formation is escape, not leadership.
Counterfeit usefulness looks like being needed instead of being called.
It looks like dating women he can fix, dating for role instead of mission, or choosing relationships where his value comes from being necessary. Being needed feels meaningful until she heals. Then he loses his role and the relationship collapses.
THE COUNTERFEITS OF MEN AND WOMEN FEED EACH OTHER.
Women reach for safety and identity.
Men reach for access and admiration.
And the loop forms:
Safety trades with Access
Rescue trades with Usefulness
Identity trades with Admiration
Certainty collides with Freedom
It feels like romance, it functions like survival, and it rarely becomes covenant.
Counterfeits do not feel cheap, because the desires underneath the ARE sacred.
No one chooses counterfeits because they hate God’s design, they choose them because they recognize it.
Counterfeits imitate covenant fruit:
Admiration feels like Honor.
Attention feels like Pursuit.
Intensity feels like Covering.
Usefulness feels like Purpose.
Predictability feels like Peace.
Access feels like Intimacy.
But fruit without root cannot survive covenant weight.
Chemistry feels like confirmation because chemistry is what happens when your nervous system recognizes familiar patterns. Sometimes the recognition is healthy. Sometimes it is just familiar.
“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other:” Galatians 5:17 (KJV)
Trauma bonds form through intensity, proximity, crisis, rescue, withholding, and reconciliation cycles.
Chemistry is an accelerant, it is not discernment.
Accelerants burn things down when no one is steering.
Trauma feels like compatibility because two wounded people can feel understood by one another.
It feels like “we just get each other,” or “our story is so deep,” or “we have insane chemistry.”
Compatibility asks “do we fit?”, covenant asks “can we build?”
These are not the same question.
Loneliness masquerades as discernment when we baptize it in spiritual language.
It sounds like “I just have standards,” or “I’m waiting on God,” or “no one is good enough,” or “I have peace being alone.”
Sometimes that is true maturity. Sometimes that is avoidance disguised as wisdom. Avoidance avoids formation because formation requires vulnerability.
Fantasy imitates faith because fantasy builds the picture and asks God to bless it.
Faith allows God to build the picture and asks us to trust Him with it.
Fantasy tries to control the outcome. Faith surrenders the outcome.
“¹Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.²In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Proverbs 3:6 (KJV)
Fantasy asks “God, give me what I want.” Faith asks “God, make me someone who can steward what You send.”
The issue under all of this is not desire. The issue is capacity.
“But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Hebrews 5:14 (KJV)
People do not choose counterfeits because they lack desire. They choose counterfeits because they lack formation.
FORMATION IS NOT ERASED BY FAILURE
Recognizing a counterfeit does not mean formation failed. It means something is working.
People do not choose counterfeits because they lack desire, they choose counterfeits because desire outruns formation.
And when clarity comes later, after attachment, after chemistry and after hope, it’s easy to assume the damage is permanent.
It isn’t.
Because formation isn’t fragile. It’s not undone by one wrong choice, one rushed season, or one relationship that revealed its misalignment over time.
Scripture does not describe God as abandoning people when they misstep, it describes Him as continuing to form them through repentance, truth, and return.
Failure does not disqualify you from covenant capacity. It reveals where healing, wisdom, and alignment are still being built.
Repentance is not punishment, it is re-entry.
God does not waste what is brought into the light. He does not withhold restoration until you “get it right next time.”
He forms capacity by redeeming experience, not by erasing it.
Counterfeits expose what is familiar, Formation retrains what feels safe.
Returning to obedience after misalignment is not starting over.
It is continuing forward with clearer discernment and deeper humility.
Capacity is not about perfection, it is about formation, and formation continues wherever truth is chosen over fantasy and obedience over urgency.
Capacity is not about perfection, capacity is about formation. Formation transforms unhealed into whole, unformed into prepared, unfocused into discerning, unanchored into called, survival into covenant, self-protection into trust.
This is what Paul meant when he wrote:
“…that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2 (KJV)
Covenant with a person is unsustainable without covenant with God first.
“And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
1 Thessalonians 5:23 (KJV)
If God is not the source of identity, safety, belonging, purpose, certainty, and healing, then the relationship becomes the tool to get those things.
That is when relationships become idolized, weaponized, outsourced, chaotic, or fragile.
“For in him we live, and move, and have our being;” Acts 17:28 (KJV)
Covenant with God does not eliminate desire. It forms desire so it no longer ruins us.
Whether you are single, dating, engaged, married, divorced, rebuilding, burned out, or afraid to try again, the path is the same:
God → Identity → Formation → Capacity → Covenant → Legacy
Some people need identity before covenant. Some need healing before capacity.
Some need repentance before clarity. Some need patience before assignment.
Some need courage before vulnerability. Some need boundaries before trust.
But nobody gets covenant without formation, nobody builds legacy without capacity, and nobody multiplies assignment until God becomes the source instead of the supplement.
“According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness,” 2 Peter 1:3 (KJV)
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10 (KJV)
Because God does not form people for empty rooms.
He forms them for assignment, and assignment requires capacity.
Closing Prayer — Chapter 7
Heavenly Father,
I bring my desires to You honestly, not pretending they are small, pure, or fully formed.
You know what I want, what I fear, and what I have reached for in the past when I was unformed, lonely, or uncertain.
Show me where I have accepted substitutes instead of waiting for formation.
Not to condemn me, but to heal me.
Help me see where I have chased intensity instead of peace, chemistry instead of discernment, and familiarity instead of obedience.
Where I have looked for safety outside of You, return me to trust.
Where I have looked for identity in being wanted, root me in being known by You.
Where I have looked for certainty through control, teach me how to rest in surrender.
Where I have reached for admiration, access, freedom, or usefulness instead of leadership, responsibility, and calling, reorder my desires without stripping me of dignity.
Train my senses to discern, not just what feels good, but what is good, pleasing, and aligned with Your will.
Heal what survival distorted.
Form what immaturity never learned.
Strengthen what covenant will eventually require.
I do not want desire to lead me where formation has not prepared me to go.
I do not want chemistry to outrun wisdom.
I do not want loneliness to masquerade as discernment, and I do not want fantasy to replace faith.
Make Yourself my source, not a supplement I add to my plans, but the foundation I build from.
Form my desires so they no longer rule me, but serve the assignment You have placed on my life.
Give me the patience to be formed, the courage to wait when waiting is obedience, and the humility to release what cannot carry covenant weight.
I trust that You are not withholding from me, You are preparing me.
And I believe that what You form in me now, and will protect what You entrust to me later.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
