DAY 49: SUNDAY
REST LONG ENOUGH TO HEAR GOD
“Be still, and know that I am God:” Psalm 46:10 (KJV)
MY PRAYER FOR YOU
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for bringing this woman to another Sunday. Yesterday, You invited her to slow down before exhaustion made the decision for her. Today, help her go deeper into that rest by turning her attention toward You.
Quiet the noise she carries into this day. The unfinished responsibilities, unanswered questions, decisions she is still considering, concerns about her children, and thoughts about the week ahead can wait for a little while.
As she gathers with other believers, help her worship without feeling that she must perform. Give her ears to hear Your Word and a heart willing to receive whatever You want to show her. Let church be more than another place she goes or another responsibility she completes. Let it be a place where she remembers who You are.
And when the service is over, help her resist rushing immediately back into everything demanding her attention. Give her space to reflect, rest, enjoy her family, and allow truth to settle before another week begins.
Teach her that stillness is not empty.
You are there.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
DEVOTIONAL
It is Sunday.
Today is intentionally lighter because you do not need another long list of things to work on.
You need time with God.
“Be still, and know that I am God:” Psalm 46:10 (KJV)
We often focus on the words “be still.”
But notice what comes next.
“And know that I am God.”
Stillness has a purpose.
It creates room to remember.
God is God.
You are not.
The problems you have been carrying are not beyond Him.
The future you cannot see is already known by Him.
The people you cannot control are still within His reach.
The prayers that have not been answered are still heard.
The things you do not understand have not confused God.
Sometimes we become so busy trying to hear from God that we forget simply to be with Him.
We read another book.
Listen to another sermon.
Search for another answer.
Ask another person what they think.
None of those things are necessarily wrong.
But there are moments when what your soul needs is not more information.
It needs quiet enough for what God has already been teaching you to settle.
That is one reason Sabbath rest matters.
God commanded His people to stop ordinary work and set time apart for Him.
“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.” Exodus 20:8 (KJV)
Holy means set apart.
Sunday should not simply become Saturday's unfinished work plus church.
There should be something different about making room for worship and rest.
That does not mean you have failed if dishes need washed, children need cared for, food needs prepared, or something genuinely necessary has to be done.
Rest is not another standard you have to perform perfectly.
The point is not legalism.
The point is remembering.
You stop long enough to remember where your strength comes from.
You worship.
You receive Scripture.
You pray.
You allow your mind and body to slow down.
You spend time with people you love.
You let yourself enjoy what God has already provided.
And perhaps you reflect on what He has been teaching you.
There is a reason reflection matters.
When you are constantly moving from one thing to another, experiences pile up without being processed.
You survive something and immediately move to the next responsibility.
You learn something and immediately search for another lesson.
You have a difficult conversation and never stop to consider what it revealed.
You experience an answered prayer and barely celebrate before focusing on the next problem.
Stillness gives you room to notice.
What did God teach me this week?
Where did I respond differently?
What was difficult?
What am I still carrying?
What do I need to leave with Him before another week begins?
You do not have to turn those questions into another assignment.
Simply notice.
Maybe something from church today connects with what God has already been showing you.
Maybe a Scripture stays with you.
Maybe you recognize something you need to pray about.
Maybe nothing dramatic happens at all.
That is okay.
Not every moment with God has to produce a revelation.
Relationship includes simply being together.
Your children need to learn this rhythm too.
Let them see that church is not merely somewhere the family has to go.
Talk about what you heard.
Ask what they noticed.
Let them ask questions.
Then let the day breathe.
Faith is not only taught during formal lessons.
It is also lived around the lunch table, on the drive home from church, during an afternoon nap, while children play, during an unhurried conversation, and in the quiet moments when nobody is accomplishing anything impressive.
You are teaching them that life with God has rhythm.
There is work.
There is worship.
There is responsibility.
There is rest.
There is speaking.
And there is listening.
Today, practice listening.
You do not have to figure out next week yet.
Tomorrow will come soon enough.
Today, be still long enough to remember who God is.
TAKE A MOMENT
After church today, think about one thing that stayed with you.
A Scripture.
A sentence from the message.
Something you felt convicted about.
Something that encouraged you.
Something you want to understand better.
Do not immediately turn it into a plan.
Sit with it for a while.
JOURNAL WITH GOD
What stood out to me during worship or the message today?
What has God been showing me this week that I need time to let settle?
What do I want to leave with God before beginning another week?
YOUR TIME WITH GOD
Let your church service be part of your time with God today.
Worship.
Listen.
Receive.
Later, find a few quiet minutes without trying to accomplish anything.
Think about what you heard.
Open your Bible again if a particular passage stayed with you.
Talk to God about it.
Then leave room for silence.
You do not need to fill every quiet moment with words.
And when your mind begins moving toward tomorrow, gently bring yourself back to today.
Tomorrow you can plan.
Tomorrow you can work.
Tomorrow you can continue growing.
Today, worship.
Today, receive.
Today, rest.
Be still long enough to remember:
God is God.
And you can rest because He does not.
