DAY 23: THURSDAY
DO NOT FALL IN LOVE WITH POTENTIAL
“Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” Matthew 7:20 (KJV)
MY PRAYER FOR YOU
Dear Heavenly Father,
Today I pray for the woman who can see possibility in people. You know the compassion in her, the hope she carries, and the way she can imagine what someone might become if he healed, matured, surrendered, or finally stepped into what she sees in him.
Protect that gift from becoming a reason she ignores reality. Teach her to love people without building covenant on potential. Give her courage to see what is present, not only what could be. Help her watch fruit, honor patterns, and refuse to make another adult’s formation her assignment.
If she is discerning a relationship, teach her that compassion is not confirmation and hope is not evidence. Let her desire what is good for a man without deciding she must be the woman who helps him become it.
Give her a soft heart and clear eyes.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
DEVOTIONAL
A woman who nurtures easily can see possibility almost everywhere. You may notice the good beneath the struggle. You may understand why someone behaves the way he does. You may see gifts that have not matured yet and character that could grow if he surrendered to God.
That ability can be beautiful. It can also become dangerous when potential begins carrying more weight than fruit.
Jesus said, “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” Matthew 7:20 (KJV). He did not tell us to discern people by the future we can imagine for them. Fruit is what is actually being produced.
Potential says he could become consistent. Fruit asks whether he is consistent now. Potential says he could become spiritually mature. Fruit asks how he responds to correction, responsibility, temptation, boundaries, and truth now. Potential says the relationship could become peaceful. Fruit asks what the relationship repeatedly produces now.
This does not mean people cannot change. God transforms people. You are evidence of that too. But another person’s possible transformation is not a foundation you can safely build your present life upon.
You are not called to mother a man into maturity. You are not called to love him so perfectly that he finally becomes safe. You are not called to carry the vision for his character while he carries only the promise of it.
A formed woman can see potential and still discern reality. She can encourage growth without attaching her future to growth that has not happened. She can pray for a man and still say no to a relationship. She can recognize wounds without excusing harmful patterns. She can believe God can change someone without deciding that she must wait inside dysfunction until He does.
Covenant requires capacity, not merely possibility. Let fruit speak.
TAKE A MOMENT
Think about a relationship or person whose potential has influenced the way you see the present. Ask yourself what is actually true today.
JOURNAL WITH GOD
Am I responding to who this person is now, or to who I hope he becomes?
What fruit is consistently present?
Have I confused understanding someone’s wounds with excusing patterns that are unhealthy?
Am I carrying responsibility for another adult’s growth?
YOUR TIME WITH GOD
Ask God for clear eyes and a soft heart.
Pray for the person without making yourself responsible for the answer to that prayer.
Read Matthew 7:16–20 and James 3:17 slowly.
Ask God to help you discern fruit without fear, fantasy, or pressure.
