DAY 35: SUNDAY

BE STILL LONG ENOUGH TO HEAR HIM

“Be still, and know that I am God:” Psalm 46:10 (KJV)

MY PRAYER FOR YOU

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for another Sunday and another opportunity for this man to stop, worship, and remember who You are.

This week has carried lessons about faithfulness, surrender, fear, fatherhood, difficult conversations, and learning what belongs to him and what belongs to You. Today, let those lessons settle instead of giving him another thing to accomplish.

As he gathers with other believers, quiet the noise he carries into the room. Help him not to spend the service thinking about what needs to happen afterward, replaying what went wrong yesterday, evaluating what everyone else needs to hear, or planning what he needs to fix tomorrow.

Let him worship You where he is.

Your Word says, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:” John 10:27 (KJV). Teach him to recognize Your voice through Scripture, prayer, godly counsel, conviction, and the work of Your Spirit rather than expecting every answer to arrive through urgency or emotion.

If he leads a household, remind him that he cannot teach others to hear You while refusing to become quiet enough to listen himself. Let his children see a father who still asks God questions. If he is married, let his wife see a husband humble enough to seek You rather than automatically assuming his first instinct must be right.

And when this day becomes quiet, help him not to immediately fill the silence.

Teach him to be still long enough to hear You.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

DEVOTIONAL

Sometimes we say we want to hear from God while keeping every available space filled.

Music playing.

Phone in hand.

Notifications.

Podcasts.

Videos.

Work.

Conversation.

Planning.

Thinking.

Even prayer can become continual talking.

That matters for men who want to lead spiritually.

Because spiritual leadership requires listening before leading.

Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27 (KJV)

Notice the order.

Hear.

Follow.

You cannot faithfully follow a voice you are unwilling to listen for.

That does not mean chasing mysterious impressions and calling every thought God.

God has already given His Word.

Scripture is the standard.

Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (KJV)

You learn God's voice by knowing God's Word.

The more familiar you become with Scripture, the easier it becomes to recognize when something contradicts His character or commands.

A feeling may tell you:

Retaliate.

Scripture says, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” Romans 12:19 (KJV)

Fear may say:

Control everything.

Scripture says, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart...” Proverbs 3:5 (KJV)

Pride may say:

You are the man. You should have the answer.

Scripture says, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God...” James 1:5 (KJV)

Anger may tell you:

You need to make them understand right now.

Scripture says, “A soft answer turneth away wrath...” Proverbs 15:1 (KJV)

This is why a man who wants to lead spiritually needs more than occasional Bible knowledge.

You need Scripture stored within you.

Psalm 119:11 says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” (KJV)

Because there will be moments when you do not have time to search for a verse.

Your child tells you something shocking.

Your wife is upset.

Someone insults you.

Temptation appears.

A crisis happens.

What is already inside you begins coming out.

Formation prepares you for those moments.

But hearing God also requires humility.

Maybe He speaks through your wife pointing out something you did not want to see.

Can you listen?

Maybe a pastor preaches something that convicts you.

Can you receive it without explaining why it applies more to somebody else?

Maybe a godly brother challenges a pattern.

Can you hear him?

Proverbs 27:17 says, “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” (KJV)

God often uses people.

But every human voice must still be weighed according to Scripture.

1 Thessalonians 5:21 says, “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” (KJV)

Listen.

Test.

Hold what is good.

That is discernment.

And sometimes hearing God means becoming quiet enough to recognize what you already know.

You keep asking:

God, what should I do?

But Scripture has already made the next step clear.

Tell the truth.

Forgive.

Repent.

Stop the sexual compromise.

Keep your word.

Protect your child.

Control your tongue.

Seek counsel.

Love sacrificially.

Apologize.

You may not need another sign.

You may need obedience.

James 1:22 says, “But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only...” (KJV)

Hearing is meant to lead somewhere.

But today, do not rush.

Listen first.

TAKE A MOMENT

How comfortable are you with silence?

When nothing demands your attention, how quickly do you reach for your phone, entertainment, work, conversation, or another task?

What might become noticeable if you were quiet for ten minutes?

JOURNAL WITH GOD

Do I make genuine room to listen to God?

How well do I know Scripture well enough to test what I believe I am hearing?

Do I sometimes ask for direction when God has already made obedience clear?

How do I respond when God uses another person to correct me?

Can my wife, children, pastor, or godly friends tell me something I do not want to hear without me immediately becoming defensive?

What noise most often keeps me from becoming still?

What might God already be asking me to obey?

YOUR TIME WITH GOD

Today, read Psalm 46:10, John 10:27, Psalm 119:9-16, James 1:22-25, Proverbs 27:17, and 1 Thessalonians 5:21.

Then create some silence.

Not an hour unless you want one.

Start with ten minutes.

Put the phone away.

Sit with Scripture.

Ask:

Father, what have You already been showing me?

Then stop talking for a while.

If a thought arises, compare it with Scripture.

If conviction comes, receive it.

If nothing dramatic happens, that is okay.

You are not performing stillness.

You are practicing presence.

If you attend church today, listen for yourself before deciding what anyone else needs from the message.

You cannot spiritually lead a household by continually telling everyone where to go while rarely stopping to ask whether Christ is still leading you.

Hear.

Then follow.
