CHAPTER 2
Give Away What God Has Given You
“And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.” 2 Timothy 2:2 (KJV)
Legacy Is Discipleship That Keeps Moving
Paul taught Timothy. Timothy was to entrust truth to faithful people who could teach others. That is legacy: truth continuing through people, not merely names surviving.
Someone taught, prayed, opened Scripture, corrected, encouraged, modeled repentance, or told us about Christ. Eventually discipleship asks what we will do with what we received.
Do Not Become the End of the Line
Discipleship is larger than titles. Parents teach children to pray. Friends walk with new believers. Older believers encourage younger ones. People who learned boundaries, recovery, grief, stewardship, or Scripture help someone else learn.
Advice and Discipleship Are Different
Advice says, “Here is what I think you should do.” Discipleship asks, “How can I help you learn to follow Christ here?” The goal is not permanent dependence on our answers but learning Scripture, prayer, discernment, obedience, repentance, return, and abiding.
Model Humility
People need to hear, “I was wrong,” “I don't know,” “I need help,” “I handled that poorly,” and “I need to apologize.” That is discipleship too. Some things are taught and some are caught by watching prayer, generosity, repentance, faith, and service lived out.
Come With Me—Now You Try
Invite people close enough to watch and serve. Then give real responsibility. Let them pray, teach, organize, lead something small, solve a problem, and learn from mistakes.
Do not make yourself irreplaceable. If everything collapses when we leave because nobody else learned to carry it, we may have built something impressive without building legacy.
Develop People, Not Just Programs
Retreats, studies, ministries, websites, and buildings can end. Formed people carry truth beyond structures. Give away what you know with humility and do not turn personal convictions or experiences into universal commands.
Sometimes Legacy Is What Stops
Rage, manipulation, secrecy, shame, financial irresponsibility, unhealthy relationship patterns, spiritual control, and refusal to apologize may need to end. Then replace them with truth, safety, prayer, boundaries, responsibility, gentle speech, repentance, Scripture, and faithfulness.
A Quiet Seed of Identity
Paul says, “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ...” 2 Corinthians 5:20 (KJV). We will return to that more strongly later. For now, remember that what we pass forward should represent Christ's Kingdom rather than our personality, wounds, preferences, or control.
Release
We are not creating followers of ourselves. People belong to Christ. Give them permission to outgrow their need for you. Let the child grow, the student teach, the mentored person lead, the new believer mature.
Christian legacy is faithfully placing something into another person's hands that they can carry forward.
