Build Into People

“For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:”
Ephesians 4:12 KJV

Read Along

The work of ministry includes equipping people. That means helping people become capable, responsible, discerning, teachable, and able to serve. It does not mean making flawless Christians or keeping everyone dependent on one leader.

We build into people when we explain why, give appropriate responsibility, let someone try, correct without humiliation, and notice character alongside skill. Waiting may sometimes be part of development. A gift can open a door that character is not ready to carry.

Parents build into future adults. Church members build into one another. Friends can strengthen courage and truth. Leaders can make room for others to grow. Specific encouragement matters because someone may need help seeing a quality God is developing in them.

Encouragement should not become pressure or prediction. We do not need to write another person’s future or announce a calling for them. We can say what is true now: “I have seen you remain gentle under pressure.” “You are becoming dependable.” “The way you listen helps people feel safe.” Then we can point that strength toward Christ.

REMEMBER
Build people who can follow Christ, not people who always need you.

Private Reflection

Who may need specific and truthful encouragement from me?

Where might I need to explain why and give someone appropriate responsibility?

How do I usually respond when someone makes a mistake?

What would correction with dignity look like?

Words that strengthen

Write a truthful, specific encouragement for one person. Point the strength toward Christ without predicting the person’s future.

Prayer

God, teach us to see people as people You love, not resources for our plans. Help us encourage truthfully, correct with dignity, and make room for others to grow. Amen.
