Chapter 9
Teachable Without Being Easily Led
“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.”
Proverbs 12:15 (KJV)
Growth requires humility. We have blind spots and can be sincere and wrong. But being teachable does not mean believing every criticism, following every confident person, or surrendering conviction whenever someone disagrees.
Humility and Discernment
Humility says, I am willing to be wrong. It does not say, I must be wrong. We can listen for the part that is true without accepting inaccurate labels.
Intent and Impact
Good intentions matter, but they do not erase impact. We do not have to accept responsibility for every emotion another person has, but we should examine our contribution.
Not Every Accusation Is Correction
Some people manipulate, project, blame, shame, or use Scripture as leverage. Being teachable does not mean remaining endlessly available for accusation.
Teachable Before God
Before teachability is about receiving instruction from people, it is about being willing to be led by God: praying, opening His Word, listening to the Holy Spirit, and surrendering the answer we want before asking for His direction. John 16:13 (KJV) says the Spirit of truth will guide us into truth.
Surrender Before Direction
There is a difference between asking God for direction and being willing to be directed. Proverbs 3:6 (KJV) calls us to acknowledge Him in all our ways.
Sometimes God Leads Through People
Teachers, pastors, supervisors, coaches, mentors, leaders, spouses, and others can instruct us. Appropriate human leadership remains under God's authority. “We ought to obey God rather than men.” Acts 5:29 (KJV).
And Sometimes God Asks You to Lead
Hebrews 11:8 (KJV) says Abraham obeyed and went out, not knowing where he was going. Sometimes God gives enough direction for one step. He may call us to start, speak, go, serve, build, lead, step away, take responsibility, open a door, or close one before we see the whole road.
Following and Leading Are Not Opposites
Healthy leadership never graduates from following Christ. Sometimes faith takes the step before understanding comes. Psalm 119:105 (KJV) pictures God's Word as a lamp to our feet, not necessarily a floodlight for the whole road.
That is what it means to be teachable without being easily led. Not unmovable. Not unstable. Surrendered enough to listen. Grounded enough to test. Humble enough to follow. Courageous enough to lead. Secure enough to stand. Faithful enough to move before you can see the whole road.
