Chapter 5

Living From Who You Already Are

“For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.”

Colossians 3:3 (KJV)

If we do not know who we are in Christ, we can spend our lives trying to become someone through relationships, roles, accomplishments, appearance, ministry, money, being needed, admired, respected, or chosen.

Roles Cannot Carry Identity

Mother, father, spouse, worker, leader, and minister are meaningful roles, but roles change. Good roles become heavy when we ask them to answer who we are.

Being Chosen Is Not the Same as Being Valuable

Jesus said, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you...” John 15:16 (KJV). Another person's choice can hurt or delight us, but it cannot establish our value.

You Are Not What You Produce

The branch bears fruit because it is alive and connected. It does not become valuable because fruit appeared. Productivity is meant to flow from life, not become the source of life.

Identity Is Tested When Confirmation Disappears

Someone can repeat “I'm chosen,” “I'm loved,” and “I'm a child of God” while still being controlled by rejection. Identity becomes visible when something that used to prove your worth is removed and you discover whether you still know who you are: when you are not chosen, not needed, not praised, when you fail, when a child struggles, a relationship ends, a role changes, or nobody notices.

You Are Not Becoming Worthy

Romans 5:8 (KJV) says Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. First John 4:19 (KJV) says we love because He first loved us. We do not become in order to earn His love. We become because His love has already reached us.

From the Inside Out

When identity is secure in Christ, we can serve without needing recognition, lead without needing control, love without possessing, give without keeping score, set boundaries without hatred, rest without guilt, receive correction without losing ourselves, and continue growing without believing unfinished places make us unworthy. I do not have to become valuable. I am becoming because I am already loved.
