Chapter 2

What Is Shaping Your Heart?

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)

Our hearts are being shaped all the time by people, experiences, relationships, what we watch, what we listen to, what we normalize, and what we repeatedly allow access.

You Learned Before You Knew You Were Learning

We learned what anger, disagreement, affection, responsibility, money, faith, strength, weakness, men, women, love, success, and failure looked like before we were old enough to examine those lessons. Some were beautiful. Some were incomplete. Some were wrong.

Inheritance and Responsibility

Understanding where a pattern came from can explain it, but does not automatically excuse continuing it. We can recognize unhealthy family patterns without villainizing our parents, and honor our parents without treating every inherited pattern as something God expects us to preserve. Maturity asks: Now that I see it, what am I going to do with it?

Familiar Is Not the Same as True

What feels normal may simply be familiar. Different histories cause people to experience the same moment differently. Sometimes we need to ask not only what happened, but what we believed it meant.

Not Everything Deserves Access

First John 4:1 (KJV) tells us to test the spirits. Someone can be confident, popular, educated, Christian, and sincere and still be wrong. So can we. Access should not automatically equal authority.

Christ Must Remain the Standard

Paul said, “Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 11:1 (KJV). We can learn from people without making them our foundation. Something is always shaping us. The question is whether Christ has the greatest influence.
