Chapter 16

Faith and Faithfulness: Becoming Someone Who Can Be Trusted

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith...”

Galatians 5:22 (KJV)

The KJV says faith. Trust in God begins shaping our choices, and over time faith begins making us faithful.

Faith Begins With Who God Is

Biblical faith is not confidence in our preferred outcome. It is confidence in God. Hebrews 11:6 (KJV).

Faith Takes Steps

Abraham went out not knowing where he went. Hebrews 11:8 (KJV). Faith may move with enough information for obedience rather than enough for certainty.

But Are We Listening?

Preschoolers often enter the “Me do!” stage. They can do some things but do not yet know when they need help. We can do that with God: I know Scripture. I've been through this. I can fix it. Me do. Capability is good, but maturity still asks: Will I listen when I think I already know what to do?

Faithfulness Is Not Doing Everything You Can Do

Just because I can fix, speak, carry, open, take on, or make something happen does not mean God is asking me to. Faithfulness is using what God gave me in obedience to Him.

Control Can Look Like Responsibility

Planning, preparing, checking, helping, protecting, and solving can be responsible. But ask: Did God give me this weight, or did I pick it up because leaving it in His hands made me uncomfortable?

Listening Requires Enough Quiet to Be Interrupted

Would we notice if the Holy Spirit said stop, wait, not yet, let them handle it, ask for help, change direction, apologize, or move now? Being led means remaining interruptible.

Mature Faith Becomes More Dependent, Not Less

I can decide and still ask. Have experience and still listen. Know Scripture and remain teachable. Carry responsibility and still ask whether it is mine. Lead and still follow. Maturity is not how much I can do without Him, but how much I have learned I do not want to do without Him.

When the Excitement Is Gone

Constant movement can sometimes be avoidance. If I keep serving, building, solving, and producing, I may never sit with what I feel or learn who I am when I am not performing.

Sometimes Faithfulness Looks Like Receiving

Sometimes we stop long enough to say: That was awesome. Look what God did. Psalm 34:8 (KJV) says taste and see that the Lord is good. We can celebrate, rest, receive, and also honestly notice where God is still forming us.

Rest Can Rewire Performance

Stillness may feel wrong when worth has been tied to usefulness. God is forming sons and daughters, not only workers. Faithfulness is neither constant movement nor constant stillness. It is staying close enough to know the difference.

Faithfulness in Relationships

Do not demand trust. Become trustworthy. Tell the truth again. Respect the boundary again. Show up again. Listen again. Follow through again.

Can God Trust Me With More?

Steward what is already in your hands, and ask: Am I carrying only what God actually placed in my hands? Taking on more weight is not automatically greater faithfulness.

Faith looks toward God. Faithfulness shows what trust produces. Not impressive. Not flawless. Faithful.
