CHAPTER 12

Fruit That Remains

“Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain...” John 15:16 (KJV)

We End Where We Began

Christ is still the Vine. We are still the branches. We still abide. The source has not changed.

But Jesus speaks of fruit that remains. Fruit begins personally, then reaches beyond the branch. Love affects someone. Peace changes a room. Gentleness changes how truth is received. Faithfulness gives someone something dependable. Witness plants seed. Discipleship helps someone grow.

What Has Already Grown?

Look back five or ten years. Before the hardship, correction, boundary, forgiveness, surrender, or lesson. Some fruit may have become so normal that you no longer notice it.

Maybe you pause where you once reacted, pray where you once panicked, apologize where you once hid, or allow free will where you once chased control. Do not congratulate the branch. Thank the Vine.

Who Has Already Received Something?

Where has something God grew in you become useful to someone else? A child learned, a friend called because you listen, someone asked you to pray, someone watched you walk through something hard, someone heard the Gospel.

Do not despise what looks small. One child, one broken family pattern, one person taught to pray, one hurting person treated gently: people matter even when numbers are small.

Fruit Remains in People

A child remembers. A friend carries something we said. Someone learns Scripture because we opened it with them. Someone learns apology because they watched us do it.

We rarely know which ordinary moments will matter. A prayer at bedtime, conversation in the car, meal, invitation, or the fact that we showed up may remain.

Faithfulness, Not Fame

Fruit that remains is not the same as being remembered. People may forget our name and still carry something God did through us. We do not have to put our name on the fruit.

The branch does not own the harvest. We steward; God owns the gift, people, field, seed, and increase.

Hold Fruit With Open Hands

There comes a point when stewardship becomes release. Someone grows and no longer needs what they once needed from us. Sometimes evidence of good stewardship is that we can release.

Do not make people stay small so you can stay important. If they are ready to stand, lead, seek God, or follow Christ somewhere else, bless them.

Commissioning Is Not Losing

Instead of, They do not need me anymore, think: They are ready to carry what God has grown in them. Go. Keep following Christ. Serve faithfully. Tell truth. Love people. Stay teachable. Keep abiding. Give away what God taught you.

Make room for succession. If everything collapses when we step away because nobody else was allowed to learn, perhaps we built dependence rather than fruitfulness.

He Must Increase

John the Baptist said, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” John 3:30 (KJV). If someone's dependence on us decreases because dependence on Christ increased, that is not failure.

Fruit that remains does not have to remain with us. The same Vine sustains them. We can release because God does not.

We Do Not Know How Far Seed Travels

A seed may be planted in one life, then that life touches another, and another. Parents shape children, teachers teach students, believers share Christ with people who eventually share Him somewhere else.

We do not have to see the end of the chain. God sees the whole field. We see one conversation; God knows every conversation that may follow.

We Will Not Spend the Legacy Story Here

There is a story about an ordinary act of faithfulness, one person reaching another and another, until the chain reaches a man whose Gospel preaching would be heard by millions. The remarkable part is also the people before him, who could not see where their faithfulness would travel.

That story belongs in Legacy. Bearing Fruit teaches what grows. Legacy will ask what continues.

Roots Before Reach

Do not force multiplication. Growth needs roots. A culture can give people an audience before character is ready to carry it. Value abiding, Scripture, accountability, character, and maturity.

Programs end, ministries change, websites disappear, books go out of print, buildings are sold. If people were formed, fruit can remain after the structure changes. People matter more than platforms.

And Then Rise

There comes a point where receiving becomes giving, healing becomes testimony, learning becomes teaching, growth becomes service, and fruit becomes seed. The person who once needed someone beside them notices someone else who needs what God taught them.

That does not mean we have arrived. It may mean it is time to stand, use what God formed, faithfully carry our part, and rise.

Fruit That Remains

Remain in Christ. Let the Father prune. Let the Spirit produce fruit. Let love become something another person experiences. Let peace steady the room. Let gentleness carry strength. Let goodness give faith hands and feet. Let self control protect what matters.

Let obedience move fruit into action. Let stewardship place it where it can serve. Let witness point beyond you. Let discipleship help another branch learn to abide. Let hard seasons deepen what God is growing. And when the fruit is ready, let it go.

Where Legacy Begins

There is seed inside. We do not know where all of it will land, who will water, or what we may live long enough to harvest. God does.

So we bear fruit. We give it away. We trust Him with what remains. Then we ask the question that carries us into the final part of this journey: What will continue after me because I was faithful to Christ while I was here? That is where Bearing Fruit ends. And where Legacy begins.
