Seeing Through Each Other’s Eyes · Part 4 of 9

Speaking Truth With Grace

A man and woman listening to one another during a calm and honest conversation
“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”Ephesians 4:29 (KJV)
“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”James 1:19 (KJV)

Words can encourage someone weary, restore a strained relationship, or point a heart toward Christ. They can also wound, discourage, and create distance that takes years to repair.

Our culture often excuses carelessness by saying, ‘I am just being honest.’ Honesty matters, but Scripture teaches that how we speak is as important as what we say.

Love sometimes requires hard conversations. The difference is that God’s truth is never meant to be a weapon. It is meant to bring healing, growth, and restoration.

Jesus never compromised truth, yet He never used truth to shame people. Even when He corrected, His desire was restoration rather than condemnation.

Many communication struggles begin in our hearts. When hurt, misunderstood, rejected, or afraid, we interrupt, assume motives, become defensive, and focus on proving our point instead of protecting the relationship.

When our identity is rooted in Christ, we do not have to win every disagreement. We become secure enough to listen before responding, ask before assuming, and extend grace even when we disagree.

Listening communicates value. It says, ‘You matter enough that I want to understand your heart before I respond.’ Understanding does not require agreement.

Before speaking, ask: Is it true? Is it loving? Is it helpful? Is this the right time? Will it point this person closer to Christ? Not every thought needs to be spoken, but every chosen word should reflect the One we follow.

Reflection

Am I quicker to listen or speak? When hurt, do my words reflect emotion or Christ? Who needs greater grace, humility, or encouragement from me?
