Seeing Through Each Other’s Eyes · Part 1 of 9

Emotional Safety

A man and woman listening to one another during a calm and honest conversation
“Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”James 1:19 (KJV)
“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying.”Ephesians 4:29 (KJV)

One of the greatest gifts we can give another person is emotional safety. Not just in marriage or dating, but in every relationship.

Emotional safety is not the absence of disagreement. It is knowing you can be honest without being attacked. It is being able to say, ‘I was wrong,’ ‘I am sorry,’ ‘I do not understand,’ or ‘I am struggling,’ without wondering if those words will be held over your head later.

It is being able to share what you are sensing in your spirit, ask hard questions, and have honest conversations without someone becoming defensive or receiving every concern as a personal attack. That does not mean every concern is correct. It simply means every concern is safe to talk about.

Emotional safety is something we are all called to cultivate. To truly offer it to another person, we first have to find our security in Christ.

When our identity is secure in Him, we do not have to defend ourselves every time someone disagrees. We can listen, apologize, receive correction, ask questions, and extend grace because we have already received it.

Healthy relationships make room for difficult conversations because that is often where trust grows deeper. The safer we become in Christ, the safer we become for the people He has placed in our lives.
