Rooted and Fruitful

Day 3 of 14 · Companion to Bearing Fruit

Receive Before You Pour

Reads as a complete devotion on its own

“We love him, because he first loved us.”

1 John 4:19 · KJV

Love begins with God. Before we serve, sacrifice, forgive, encourage, or carry responsibility, we are loved by the One who gave Himself for us. Christian love is not manufactured from an empty place. It is received, trusted, and then given away.

When we do not know how to receive love, we may try to earn it through usefulness. We become the dependable one, the rescuer, the performer, or the person who never needs anything. Service can look generous while secretly asking, Will you keep me if I remain necessary?

Human love is a gift, but it cannot become the Vine. People have limits, changing seasons, needs, and freedom. Their attention cannot securely hold our identity. When Christ becomes our source, we can receive human love with gratitude instead of trying to control it for survival.

Receiving from Christ may feel difficult if love has often been unsafe, conditional, or inconsistent. Do not force a feeling. Begin with truth. His love is not earned by perfect performance. His correction is not rejection. His presence is not withdrawn because you arrived tired, confused, grieving, or in need of help.

There is humility in receiving. We allow God to meet us through Scripture, prayer, rest, wise counsel, practical help, and the faithful care of other people. Receiving does not make us weak. It keeps giving from becoming a way to avoid our own need.

You do not have to empty yourself until nothing remains in order to prove love. Abide. Receive. Let Christ settle the question of your worth. Then what you give can become an offering instead of a bargain, and love can flow without demanding that another person pay you back with identity.

Reflect

Sit with the question

Do you find it easier to give love or receive it? Where has being useful become a way to earn worth, security, or a place in someone else's life?

Practice

Take one faithful step

Receive one appropriate gift of care today without minimizing it or immediately repaying it. Also speak 1 John 4:19 aloud and let God's love come before your usefulness.

Pray

Bring it before God

Father, teach me to receive the love You have already given in Christ. Free me from trying to earn belonging through performance or usefulness. Help me accept wise care with humility and give from fullness rather than fear. Let Your love become the source of the love I offer. Amen.

Truth to carryI do not serve to become loved. I serve because I have been loved.
