The Heart of Becoming · Part 2 of 5

What Is Shaping My Heart?

An open Bible and a quiet path in warm morning light
“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”Matthew 6:21 (KJV)
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”Philippians 4:8 (KJV)

Yesterday, we talked about what we value. But that led me to another question: What is actually shaping my heart?

Over the past year, God has been patiently teaching me something that keeps showing up in almost every area of my life. Whether it is parenting, relationships, ministry, trust, surrender, or simply learning to follow Jesus more closely, it all seems to lead back to the same question.

As Christians, we ask how to become more like Jesus, a better parent, spouse, friend, or witness. Those are good questions, but they lead back to something deeper: What am I continually giving my heart to?

For years, I mostly associated treasure with money or possessions. But treasure is whatever we continually invest ourselves in: our thoughts, conversations, entertainment, fears, disappointments, ambitions, relationships, desire to be accepted, desire to feel safe, and our time with God.

Whatever continually captures our attention slowly begins to capture our hearts. Whatever captures our hearts eventually shapes who we are becoming.
