Beside One Another

Call Out What Is Growing

Reads as a complete devotion on its own

“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:”

Hebrews 10:24 · KJV

Some people help us see what God is growing before we recognize it ourselves. A teacher notices a gift. A friend names courage. A parent sees compassion. A mentor says, I think you are ready. Faithful encouragement can become the light that helps another person take a step.

Hebrews tells us to consider one another. Encouragement begins with attention. It notices the person rather than offering the same easy words to everyone. It asks what is growing, what may need courage, and what kind of support would help without taking over.

Encouragement is not flattery. Flattery says what creates a response. Encouragement tells the truth. It can name progress while still being honest about what needs growth. You handled that conversation with more patience than before is more useful than, You are amazing at everything.

Helping someone grow may require making room for them to try. They may not do the task exactly as we would. They may need instruction, correction, another opportunity, or the dignity of learning from a manageable mistake. If we take over every time the work becomes imperfect, our help can quietly keep them small.

Healthy mentoring creates greater dependence upon Christ and growing responsibility, not permanent dependence upon the mentor. The goal is not to remain necessary. It is to equip someone so faithfully that they can eventually carry what is theirs without needing our approval at every step.

Celebrate when someone grows beyond what they once needed from you. Their strength does not erase your contribution. Perhaps what you planted will one day become shade for people you never meet. Encouragement passes faithfulness forward by helping another person become ready to encourage someone else.

Reflect

Sit with the question

Who has helped you recognize what God was growing in you? Is there someone near you whose progress, courage, gift, or next step needs to be named truthfully?

Practice

Take one faithful step

Offer one specific encouragement today. Name what you have observed and why it matters. If appropriate, create one small opportunity for that person to try, contribute, lead, or grow without you taking over.

Pray

Bring it before God

Lord, teach me to consider the people around me. Help me notice what You are growing and speak encouragement that is honest and useful. Make me secure enough to share opportunity, patient enough to let people learn, and joyful when they no longer need what I once gave. Amen.

Truth to carryFaithful encouragement helps another person take their own next step.
