Beside One Another

Day 1 of 14 · Companion to Walking Together

Who Is Leading?

Reads as a complete devotion on its own

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”

John 15:5 · KJV

Most of us enter relational difficulty asking what the other person should do. They should listen. They should change. They should understand. Sometimes those concerns are completely valid. But before we decide how someone else needs to walk, there is a question that belongs to us: Who is leading me right now?

Jesus did not describe Himself as one helpful branch among many. He said He is the vine. He is the source of life, truth, wisdom, love, and the fruit we hope to carry into our relationships. The people beside us matter deeply, but they cannot become our source. They were never meant to provide everything only Christ can give.

When we ask another person to become our source, ordinary human limits begin to feel like rejection. Their attention has to prove our worth. Their agreement has to give us peace. Their presence has to make us secure. Love becomes heavy when one person is expected to hold another person's identity, healing, direction, and hope.

Relationships also reveal our gait. Fear may make us grip tightly. Pride may make us refuse correction. Pain may make us expect harm before it happens. Control may make us call pressure leadership. None of this means we are beyond healthy relationship. It means the place between us has shown us another place where we need Christ.

Returning to Christ does not mean avoiding a necessary conversation or pretending harm is acceptable. Abiding gives us a steadier place from which to speak, apologize, set a boundary, forgive, wait, or make a difficult decision. We stop reacting as though everything depends upon the other person's response.

You cannot surrender another person's gait. You cannot make someone listen, repent, mature, stay, or follow Christ. You can bring your own steps under His leadership. Before trying to manage the whole relationship, become quiet enough to ask what is leading you and what faithfulness requires from you today.

Reflect

Sit with the question

Think about one relationship that has been carrying pressure. What have you been asking that person to provide that ultimately belongs to Christ? What is leading your own responses right now: love, fear, pride, pain, control, or surrender?

Practice

Take one faithful step

Pause before your next interaction with that person. Name what belongs to you and what does not. Ask Christ to lead your tone, timing, words, and boundary. Then take only the step that is yours.

Pray

Bring it before God

Jesus, You are the vine, and I am a branch. Forgive me for asking people to become my source or trying to control steps that are not mine. Show me what is leading me. Teach me to abide in You closely enough that truth, wisdom, courage, and love shape the way I walk beside others. Amen.

Truth to carryI can love people deeply without asking them to become my source.
